Weekly Waffle #80

So game night again this week but we didn’t actually get a game in. As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago the miniatures for MERCS 2.0 had finally arrived and this was my first chance to get a look at them. Now I have to say that I had been managing my expectations after seeing the civilian models in the Recon box. The Kickstarter was essentially two games with Recon being more of a board game and 2.0 being the next evolution of the existing game. After looking at the miniatures it appears that they have looked at the lowest quality they could get away with for the board game components and applied this to all the miniatures. They’ve used this resin plastic combo that seems to be quite common in board games but it’s not crisp so everything just seems very lack lustre.

Of the factions that hadn’t yet been claimed the Keizai Waza seemed to be the crispest option and because I don’t have them already I decided to go with these. I also volunteered to paint up some of the civilians but I’m not sure what sort of priority I will give them. It would be nice to try and get them done so we can get some games of Recon in with painted minis but they just don’t inspire me, in fact after seeing these I think I can safely say that whilst I will continue to play with what I already have I won’t be getting anything else for MERCS.

The civilians don’t seem to be quite as bad for some reason. Maybe it’s because they are single piece minis or maybe it’s just because I think of them as being board game pieces so my expectations aren’t quite has high. Whatever the reason I’m not as disappointed with these guys.

On the rest of the Hobby front I’ve been on a role with my Wild West Exodus Confederate Rebellion Scouts. Having completed the first two and locked down the colour scheme for them last week I just carried on knocking them out. So that I didn’t over face myself I only worked on two at a time. I think that worked because I was constantly seeing progress being made with them, as opposed to painting a ten man unit were you spend a lot of time painting same thing over and over again. Anyway whatever the reason I’ve managed to get eight scouts finished and ready for use.

I’ve also managed to paint up one of the heavy weapon scout who has a different colour scheme to the others. Like the rest of the Scouts I based his colour scheme on the artwork in the Wild West Exodus Concept Art book which was a big help. There are couple of other characters that have a similar colour scheme so it should look to out of place.

I’m not sure if I’m going to start the MERCS next week or not but I am going to try and carry on with the Confederates whilst I’m in the groove. I might not get as many done as I’ve managed this week but anything is better than nothing. It might be time to have a go at some of the characters so that I can actually field them in a game in the not too distant future. Give Al something else to beat. On the MERCS front I might try and start some of the civilians as these are more board game pieces so I don’t think I’ll get too hung up on the poor quality. It’s also a chance to paint something a bit different.

On that note that’s it for this week. Have a good weekend and I hope to see you all again next week.
