Confederate – Buford Nash (Sidekick) – Painting Guide

I’ve used the artwork in the Concept Art book as my reference for painting Buford. In this artwork the predominant colour is brown so some strong contrasts and touch of metallic will be used to try and give things a bit of a pop whilst sticking with the overall scheme of the concept art.

With that in mind the first step was to prime the model and I did this using Vallejo Black Surface Primer (74.602) for a first coat. I then went back over the model using Vallejo Grey Surface Primer (74.601) at about a forty five degree angle to start to build up some shadow and highlight.

Clothing: Once the primer was fully dry I painted all of the clothing with a coat of Vallejo Golden Brown (71.032). This allowed the pre-shading to show through so there was some contrast right from the start. The next step was to highlight all of the raised areas with Vallejo Desert Yellow (72.763). Everything was then given a couple of washes with Citadel Orgryn Flesh wash which did a really good job of showing up the contrasts in the folds of the clothing. The final step for the clothing was to go back over the areas that would naturally catch the light with a final highlight of Vallejo Desert Yellow (72.763).

Leather Work: The leather for things such as holster, belt and boots is done with Vallejo Beasty Brown (72. 043) followed by an edge highlight of Vallejo Desert Yellow (72.763). This is then given a wash of Vallejo Dark Brown Wash (76.514).

Weapons: Buford’s primary weapon is a rifle and the artwork shows it as being quite fancy so with that in mind I started off with Vallejo Bright Brass (71.067). This was then highlighted with Vallejo Polished Gold (72.055). This was then washed with Citadel Orgryn Flesh wash to dull things down and to help darken the shadows. The final step for the metal areas of the weapon was to go back over the areas that would naturally catch the light with Vallejo Polished Gold (72.055). The wooden areas of the rifle along with grip on his pistol and the knife scabbard were painted using Vallejo Wood Grain (70.828)

Skin: For the skin I started with a base of Reaper MSP Bones Barbarian Flesh (09442) and then highlighted this by mixing in some Vallejo Basic Skin Tone (70.815) building up to just using the Basic Skin Tone. Then to finish things off on the final highlights I mixed in some Vallejo Pale Flesh (72.003).

Miscellaneous Details: For the metal areas such as armour and ammunition I took the same approach as I had for the rifle and started off with Vallejo Bright Brass (71.067). For the lens on the scope of the rifle I use Vallejo Chrome (71.064), followed by some Badger Ghost Tint Plasma Fluid (D6-180). On the ammunition I use a similar method stating with Vallejo Chrome (71.064), but this time followed by some Badger Ghost Tint Fresh Blood (D6-111). For his gloves I used a watered down Vallejo NATO Black (71.251) followed by a wash of Citadel Null Oil wash.

Bases: I decided to split the basing down into two separate sections. First of all I took the standard WWX base that came with the model and primed it with Vallejo Black Surface Primer (74.602). Once this was dry I went over everything again using Vallejo Grey Surface Primer (74.601). I then used a thinned down Vallejo Wood Grain (70.828) to give a sort of polished wood effect.
For the second part I cut out some plasticard inserts that would fit in the WWX base and then used green stuff to give it a broken earth texture. Before the green stuff set I pressed in some Secret Weapon Scenics Tree Stumps. This part was then primed using Vallejo Black Surface Primer (74.602). I then dry brushed over this with Citadel Dark Fang Brown followed by Citadel Skrag Brown and then a final coat of Citadel Tallarn Sand. The next step was to use Vallejo Desert Yellow (72.763) to highlight the edges of all of the broken areas to give them a bit of pop. Everything was then given a wash of Vallejo Dark Brown Wash (76.514) and a final highlight with the Vallejo Desert Yellow (72.763). The trees were give a wash of Vallejo Rust Wash (76.506) and when that was dry two coats of Vallejo Dark Brown Wash (76.514) before the highlights were picked out with Vallejo Desert Yellow (72.763).
The Buford was then mounted to the base and Secret Weapon Ancient Earth and Yellow Earth weathering powder was used to blend the lower part ofBuford with the base. With all that complete the last step was to add the grass. For this I use 6mm Mixed Green (Wild) Gamers Grass.
