Confederate – Blackhoof Scout (Light Support) – Painting Guide

For the Blackhoof Scout I again turned to the Concept Art book for some inspiration and decided to use a variation on how they had done things. The main thing I changed was the colour scheme for the rider. In the concept art he has a similar look to Corporal Franklyn but I decided that because he was a scout he should have the same scheme as my other scouts. I was sort of thinking that all scouts would cover longer distances on a Blackhoof and then dismount to get up close and personal.

So with all that I mind I got started priming the model using Vallejo Black Surface Primer (74.602) for a first coat. I then went back over the model using Vallejo Grey Surface Primer (74.601) at about a forty five degree angle to start to build up some shadow and highlight.

Blackhoof: For the Blackhoof itself I started things off by giving everything a thinned down coat of Vallejo Arctic Blue (71.071). This gave everything a metallic blue feel but still allowed the pre-shading to come through. At this stage though it was way too bright so I went over everything again with a couple of coats of Secret Weapon Blue Black wash which darkened everything up. Next up I use Vallejo Bright Brass (71.067) to pick out some of the edge detailing. Like the blue this was a bit bright so this was given a wash of Citadel Orgrin Flesh Wash. Next up it was the springs, pistons and pivots that were done using Vallejo Gun Grey (71.072) and highlighted with Vallejo Aluminum (71.062). Everything was then subdued with a wash of Citadel Null Oil Wash. In the concept are there were areas that looked like they were glowing with the power of RJ so to do these is started with a coat of Vallejo Aluminum (71.062) and then went over this with Badger Ghost Tint Fresh Blood (D6-179).

Riders Cloak: I started with a base of Vallejo Interior Green (71.010). The camouflage effect was then done using Vallejo Gunship Green (71.014) followed by Vallejo Golden Brown (71.032). Everything then gets a wash of Vallejo Dark Yellow Wash (76.503) to help bring it all together.

Clothing: For the clothing on the rider i started with a couple of thinned down coats of Vallejo Golden Brown (71.032) so that the highlights and shading from the priming stage can still be seen. This was then highlighted with Vallejo Desert Yellow (72.763). Everything was then washed with a couple of coats of Citadel Orgrin Flesh Wash before the recesses were given a wash of Vallejo Dark Brown Wash (76.514). The final step for the clothing was to pick out the highlights with Vallejo Desert Yellow (72.763).

Leather Work: The leather for things such as holster, belt, saddle and boots was done with Vallejo Beasty Brown (72. 043) followed by an edge highlight of Vallejo Desert Yellow (72.763). This was then given a wash of Vallejo Dark Brown Wash (76.514).

Riders Weapons: The metal parts were done with Vallejo Gun Grey (71.072) and highlighted with Vallejo Aluminum (71.062). Everything was then subdued with a wash of Citadel Null Oil Wash. The final step was to pick out the areas that would catch the light with Vallejo Aluminum (71.062). The wood areas on the rifle, close combat weapon was done with a couple of coats of watered down Vallejo Wood Grain (70.828).

Miscellaneous Details: The bandana was done with a coat of Vallejo Pure Red Surface Primer (70.624) followed by a highlight of Citadel Evil Sunz Scarlet. The goggles were done with a base of Vallejo Aluminum (71.062) before going back with Badger Ghost Tint Plasma Fluid (D6-180) for the lenses.

Bases: I decided to split the basing down into two separate sections. First of all I took the large WWX base that came with the model and primed it with Vallejo Black Surface Primer (74.602). Once this was dry I went over everything again using Vallejo Grey Surface Primer (74.601). I then used a thinned down Vallejo Wood Grain (70.828) to give a sort of polished wood effect.

For the second part I cut out a plasticard insert that would fit in the WWX base and then used green stuff to give it a broken earth texture. Before the green stuff set I pressed in some Secret Weapon Scenics Tree Stumps. This part was then primed using Vallejo Black Surface Primer (74.602). I then dry brushed over this with Citadel Dark Fang Brown followed by Citadel Skrag Brown and then a final coat of Citadel Tallarn Sand. The next step was to use Vallejo Desert Yellow (72.763) to highlight the edges of all of the broken areas to give them a bit of pop. Everything was then given a wash of Vallejo Dark Brown Wash (76.514) and a final highlight with the Vallejo Desert Yellow (72.763). The trees were give a wash of Vallejo Rust Wash (76.506) and when that was dry two coats of Vallejo Dark Brown Wash (76.514) before the highlights were picked out with Vallejo Desert Yellow (72.763).

The Scout was then mounted to the base and Secret Weapon Ancient Earth and Yellow Earth weathering powder was used to blend the lower part of the Blackhoof with the base. With all that complete the last step was to add the grass. For this I use 6mm Mixed Green (Wild) Gamers Grass to try and further blend the scout with the base. Essentially trying to make it look like there is a bit of a trail through the base and that the rider could drop down and disappear into the environment at any moment.
