Weekly Waffle #121

This week saw a return to my nomadic life style so no chance to get any gaming in but having said that it’s been a reasonably productive hobby week and the post man has delivered a few surprises. It’s always nice when you pre-order something and then forget all about it until it turns up on your door step.

So first up this week are the images that I couldn’t get uploaded last week, technical issues now resolve. As I mentioned last week I had ordered the first of the modular ships for my Dystopian Wars Russian Coalition force but hadn’t really paid any attention to the fact that it was a Battleship so was a bit surprised when it turned up. It seems that Spartan Games are embracing this approach I and think it is a really good idea as it adds a bit of variety without bumping up the costs too much. In this instance we have the Pakhtusov Battleship that can be configured in either its MK I ‘Terror’ version (first pictures) or the MK II ‘Assault’ version (second pictures). The MK I has better range but is more limited to its forward arch whereas the MK II is shorter range but has a very good broadside. I’ll need to have a few games to work out how best to use it but I think that what I will do regardless of which version I use is to go with the ornate smoke stack if this is my command ship.

Next up we have the nice surprise from the post man this week in the form of Guild Ball Season Three. I’d ordered this when it first went up for pre-order and had then proceeded to forget all about so I was somewhat puzzled when a parcel turned up for me. I’ve not played it as much as I would have liked of late but the game and models are fantastic so I’m going to continue to collect the teams and get games in whenever I can. Although I am going to make more effort this year to do just that. So the third edition rule book brings the rules for the Farmers guild and the do look quite nice. It also hints at the other faction that will be coming out later in season there with the inclusion of Grace and Benediction as new characters for the Union. So make of those names what you will. This third season book is another hardback affair and is noticeably thicker than the season two book. Understandable given a smattering of new characters across the guilds and a completely new guild to boot. I really like the way they have chosen to expand the game so that none of the original models become defunct with future releases as they just get updated stats cards if needed. I thought it would be nice to have a look at all the rule books side by side and it turned up in time to give me something to read whilst stuck in a hotel room for a couple of days.

Most of my time this week has been, appropriately enough, spent on painting up some Guild Ball Fishermen. I’ve had these guys for ages now but just haven’t got round to painting them. However after painting up Mist last week I’ve got the bug to for Guild Ball again so thought I would have a go at getting these guys done. I’ve not quite managed to get them finished this week but I’ve made some good progress and I’m happy with how they are looking so far. I was thinking of going with a slightly different colour scheme for this batch and giving them some white trousers and shirts instead of the blue I used on the rest of the team. I’m not sure if it will work but my thinking is that the turquois is the main team colour so as long as that matches they should still look ok.

That rounds out the hobby for this week and my plan is to mix things up a bit next week. I’ve ordered some sheets of plasticard which I will need to make the bases for the fishermen and I’m also going to get round to basing my Dystopian wars ships starting with the Pakhtusov. I’ve avoided it for years but every time I see Pete fantastically based ships I feel a little bit ashamed I haven’t made the effort so I’m going to change that now. I’m also going to make a start on the Pakhtusov with a new colour scheme so I may have some pictures of how that is progressing for you as well next week. In the meantime have a good week and hope to see you all again next week.
