Weekly Waffle #144

It’s been another disappointing hobby week for me again this week but this time I’m blaming it firmly on the Scottish. Yes I know it’s it a bit harsh to blame all my hobby woes on a single nation but it’s all their fault. Ok maybe not all of them but it’s certainly down to a couple of them. Let me explain. I’ve had a cold, well it’s really a near terminal case of man flue, for about six weeks and I just can’t seem to shake it. Now I thought I had just about broken its back when work send me up to an undisclosed location in Scotland. To an office full of new bugs, which made the bugs I had just about beaten the silly idea that they could start the process feeling like s**t all over again. The result has been a week of runny nose, coughing until it hurts and generally feeling sorry for myself. It’s been that bad I’ve not had a single drink since the stag doo. Now that’s just not fair.

The result of all of this has been that I’ve watched a lot of Netflix and done very little hobby. But this has lead me into a bit of dilemma. Whilst I’ve been sitting here feeling sorry for myself I’ve been sketching up a few idea for my Crystal Brush build and to be frank the more time I have the sillier things seem to be getting. At the rate I’m going this is going to be a table size project not a little diorama. But in a bit of convoluted way I may have a back-up plan. One of the things I’ve been watching on Netflix has been Zoo and part of the opening titles has a Rhinoceros on a city street, which got me thinking. I had an idea that I had seen a model of a Gladiator riding a Rhino somewhere and that sounded like a cool model to me. A bit of Google time and it turns out that in my obviously addled sate I had got a couple of images mixed up. What I had actually seen was a Rhino and then a Gladiator riding a charging Bull. Not quite what I was thinking but still a very cool mini courtesy of Arena Rex.

With the backup in place I have made a bit of start on the Grot Bot project by making the basic boxes for the heads. Now this highlighted how long it’s been since I’ve done any scratch building as it took me forever to find my Slater’s Mek-Pak and when I did eventually find it I was dismayed to find it was nearly empty. This is stuff is my go to glue whenever I’m working with plasti-card so I’ve put an emergency order in. In the meantime at the pace I’m currently working at what I have left will probably last a life time. In my defence I now realise why I only ever make a couple of squads as there are so many faddily little bits that need to done. I’ve been working through what goes into each one and without weapons there over a hundred bits that go to make up each one, and that’s not including the nuts, bolts and rivets that go into each one.

As you can see from the bits I’ve done so far my plan it to try and make all the main parts I need for about fifteen bots. Something of a random figure that came about simply because that was how much box section I had laying around for building the heads. That should be enough bits to have a couple of complete bots on show with one on the work bench and then the rest of parts scattered around the work shop. I’ve also managed to track down one of the Grot Controller sculpts me and Pete had commissioned go along with the bots. It’s basically a Grot with a game controller which I’m going to try and fit in somewhere.

Going back to the Waffle side of things this whole idea of doing something for a Crystal Brush entry has really brought something to light for me. That is what is it that makes you stick at a project. I’m one of those that gets all excited and enthused about a new project but once the shine wears off I’ll push that to one side and launch myself into something new. That wasn’t so much of problem when I was gaming on a regular basis as things needed to be done to be able to play. That was especially so when we used to attend the GW 40K Doubles events down at Warhammer World as it wasn’t just me I would be letting down if something wasn’t finished. Whilst some of these deadlines were manic at the time I always got things done and they are still available for me to use in games. But now I’m not playing as much the deadlines don’t seem to matter anymore and whilst I start lots of projects I’ve got just as many still to finish. Now don’t get me wrong I’m still enjoying what I’m doing with it being something of cycle were the hobby is on top and the gaming is a bit of nice to have. But I’m open to suggestions on ways of setting myself little challenges, none of this paint a new army by x date, for how I can finish off some of my ‘on the shelf’ projects. Answer on a post care, or really it would be easier in the comments.

Anyway that’s it for this week. More travels next week but I’m going to concentrate on trying to get more bits together for the shed and to try and start some test pieces. My main aim is to try and get a feel for how big this things is going to be and then I can work out how to break it down into manageable chunks. Hope you all have a good weekend and I’ll see you all again next week.
