Weekly Waffle #185

I’m going to do things out of order this week and start off with games night. We’ve decided that we are all going to do a different Kill Team and then run a bit of campaign. But to add as much variety as we can we are all going to do a different team. I have a few ideas for what I would like to do but someone came up with the idea of it being a random selection. So we put all of the all of the different team into one pot and our names into another. Then it was just a case of picking a name and then the Kill Team that person was going to get. No swapsies allowed! The result of this was:

  • Al – Imperial Guard
  • Anna – Harlequins
  • Corey – Space Marines
  • Darren – Death Guard
  • Gaz – Orks
  • Mick – Thousand Sons
  • Mark – Death Watch
  • Pete – Dark Eldar
  • Sam – Tau
  • Tom – Necrons
  • Me – Genestealer Cult

Most people were happy with what they ended up with but I have to say that Genestealer cult was not something I particularly happy with. Not that I have anything against them but I just had no idea about how to paint them. But we had all agreed that what we got was what we got so just sulked for a bit. Any way since then I’ve done some searching on the interweb and I’ve come across a colour scheme that I really like the look of so I’m now coming round to the idea. It’s amazing to me how things change for a project once you either have an idea or in this find some inspiration somewhere else. The next step is get a squad painted up by the end of August and then we can take things from there.

On the DnD front we finally made it to Adun but much to my dismay the monastery I need to get to is another day’s travel so I’ve still not managed to complete my quest. On a positive note we did manage to get through a whole session without getting involved in a fight. Although myself and Hoppilpick did have to use our Halfling abilities to hide under a table in a tavern in order to stay out of the way of a town guard we may have slightly misled when entering town. Corey our resident Dwarven fighter ended up buying two shields after he bought one from an Elf armour in the first shop he came to. Then he ended up shop of Dwarven armourer and shame of buying from an Elf overcame him and he bought a Dwarven shield. This was the same craftsman that is going to upgrade Hops magic staff with one of the shards of Ubrilium we have found during our travels. The other thing of note is that most of us have signed up to become members of the hunters lodge. It was basically that we needed somewhere to stay and only members of the lodge can stay in its halls but the more I think about it the more sense it makes. We need to complete a contract before things get formalised but world our DM has created for us has a bit of influence from Game of Thrones with the different houses. Everyone has a loyalty mark and if you don’t have one or have the wrong one you can end up all sorts of awkward situations. Having the hunters mark will alleviate some of the suspicion we often encounter whilst at the same time allowing us to move freely between territories.

We also managed to get another session in this week were we made the trip to the actual monastery and what I hopped would be an end to my quest. But as it turned out it may end up being the end of my character. I returned the artefact and was thanked by the Abbott who also said I could make a contribution to the order as part of my travels. I agreed to this as it was in keeping with my existing roll and just gave me a few more responsibilities, whilst at the same time allowing me to help a few more people. Whilst this had been going on the others were given the hospitality of the monastery and a bit of tour. And now it’s time for a cinematic reference, think Captain America Civil War and you have an idea of what is to come. One of the key things about the monastery is that it has a vault containing artifices that need to be kept safe from the world. But half of the party what in there for their own reasons. The upshot of this is that they have broken the ancient seals protecting the vault and released something into the world. The other half of us, after a bit of a fight have managed to close the vault again but in the process have sealed in one of our friends. So with the clock rapidly approaching midnight on a school night we have halted the adventure there. My new oath to help the order puts me in bit of precarious position now as I have to stop anything coming out of that vault so it’s going to be interesting to see what happens next. As things stand we have a game lined up for next Thursday so with a bit of look I’ll have an update for you next week.

On the hobby front I’ve had yet another change of direction. Stranger JD has taken a back seat this week and I’ve been working a new 40K project. A friend of a friend has been asking me for ages to do a Death Wing commission for him and I’ve dogged around the subject up until now. Partly because I’ve now got my name down for a bottle of spiced rum and partly because I fancied giving this a go. Part of the reason he has been asking me to do this is because he knows I’m a Dark Angels fan even though I sold my last army. But I’ve never done any Death Wing so rather than agreeing to do the commission I’ve pick up a box of Death Wing and I’ve started work on it. If it turns out ok I’ll offer it to him and if it’s a complete disaster I’ll just tell him I can’t do it. So no pressure to deliver it as he wants it or to a time scale.

I’ve made start and my plan was to do the main parts of the armour with the airbrush and then to do the rest with the brush. To this end I’ve started with a desert yellow and worked up to a final high light of ivory. I’m not sure if this is to white at the moment but I’m not going to do anything else with it until I’ve finished everything else. If I still think it’s do white at the end I’ll work on toning it down at the end.

I also wanted to do something a bit different with the base so I’ve gone with a combination display base / movement tray. Each of the gaming bases fits into the display part and is held in place by magnets. The bases will fit into any of the positions but if you want them to line up then the characters need to be in the correct position. That will be the Sergeant in the centre. Flanked by the Apothecary on the left and thunder hammer on the right. Then the standard bearer and heavy weapon guy. The watcher in the dark will be in the centre behind the Sergeant. That leave some open areas that he front of the base but I’m not sure if want to add anything here in case it draws they eye away from the models. Although I am toying with the idea of putting a couple of lecterns in the corners so that I can write in the name of the fallen. But that’s going to be a wait and see thing I think.

All in all I think that has been a productive week, it’s also seen me get to the end of another of gym classes and although I’ve not lost as much weight this time round. But it’s still another three quarters of stone off my gamer physic so I’m quite happy with that. Whilst I’m on a roll I’m going to try and progress with the Death Wing and my aim for this week is to get the cloaks / cowls completed as I’m confident I can do everything else if I can get that bit right. So no cycling to distract me this week so I’ll see how I get on. Until then have a great week and I’ll catch up with all next week.
