Weekly Waffle #233

Well it’s been a good hobby week this week, I’ve had lots of travel for work but what hobby I have had has been really good which has given me lots to share in this weeks weekly waffle Plus, there’s more to follow before the weekend is over. Game night was the first time I’ve been along in while and what a good night it was. First of all it was really nice and cool in the cellar so it was an escape from this heat wave we have here at the moment. Now I know some places are much hotter then here year round but for some of us northerners seeing that big ball of fire in the sky burning so hot is not pleasant. Cold and dry all the way for me. Anyway back to game night. Pete brought along Black Stone Fortress so four of us had a bit of tester game. Running through one game as a one shot affair as opposed to running it as the first game of a proper adventure.

I’ve not got any close ups of the models but Pete has done a really good job of painting everything up which always makes a game more fun. The mechanics of the game seem pretty simple but it soon became apparent that the game escalates very quickly. For our one off we drew Ambush as our encounter so were surrounded by enemies on all sides. There were four of us playing so each of us took control of an adventurer and also one of the enemy units. This kept us involved throughout the game and it also adds something strange to the mix when you are rolling the damage they will do against you or your party. For our game it swung from us thinking we’ve got this to it’s going wrong with each action. For me the bit that really sold it to me and an has me wanting to play again was the fact that it’s a co-operative game. It just has a very different feel where you are all quickly trying to work how is going to do what. Looking further ahead not all encounters are combat which is also nice as it throws something new into the mix.

The plan is that we will start to run a proper adventure to see if we can actually get to and then open the secret vault at its heart. One of the things that looks like a really nice touch is that there is a sealed envelope in the box and you can only open it when you win. Its also a time limited game in as much as you only get so many attempts to get the vault before you run out of Encounters and the game ends. So it looks like this might be something that occupies a bit of time for a while and I will keep you updated on our progress in future updates.

Keeping with the gaming side of things we have another D&D adventure planned for tomorrow which will the first in a while. Hopefully we can get through the session without anyone being killed or gravely wounded and I can try and find a way of replacing my war hammer. I’ve given our DM some ideas of what I would like to do but will have to wait and see how they fit in with her plans for us. Which will probably end up with someone being killed. Tom is back for this session as well so that spice things up a bit. All in all I’m looking forward to a great Sunday D&D adventure to set me up for work next week.

As I mentioned earlier I’ve been on the road a lot this week for work so hobby time has been limited but what time I have had has gone into working on the Warlord. But I’m really getting tiered of painting gold trim. Every one of our group who has painted titans said the same thing but I haven’t felt that bad until now. It’s the spending lots of time on something and feeling like you are making no progress at all. That’s how it feels at the moment. Just when I think I’ve got the base brass colour down and I can move onto something else I find something I’ve missed. Then more and more. But I will get there in the end. At least now when all the bits are added together and the model is on the base it sort of looks done, from the right angle. So still a lot of work to do but all you can do is carry on.

On the titan front the new knights look quite nice although I’m not sure I could bring myself to painting any more gold trim at the moment. Although after tomorrows D&D session I may be up for
